and emergency services. Equipped with the advanced medical,

The Anaesthetic Unit provides a full range of anaesthetic services for Kareena
Private Hospital 24 hours a day.
Cardiology
Kareena Private Hospital offers cardiac patients with cardiology diagnostic

Catheter Laboratory
A state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, featuring sophisticated automated
digital medical imaging equipment was opened in 2005 as the first such catheter
laboratory in the Shire. The Laboratory can perform the very latest tests and
procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Angiography, angioplasty
and stenting are also undertaken in the Laboratory. Additionally Kareena Private
Hospital’s
laboratory is the only 24 hour service available in the Shire.
Coronary
Care Unit
The Coronary Care Unit allows for the complete management of all acute cardiac
emergencies including heart attacks, angioplasty and pacemaker procedures,
rhythm monitoring and full haemo-dynamic pressure monitoring.
Ear,
Nose & Throat (ENT)
The ENT Department at Kareena Private Hospital has a multi-disciplinary approach
to patient management and liaises with the Speech Pathology, Plastic Surgery
and Oral Surgery Departments. A
wide range of ENT surgery can be performed at the Hospital.
Emergency
Department
Well-equipped with life-saving technology, the Kareena Emergency Department
is the only private emergency
department in South Sydney and only one of three private emergency departments in New South Wales. A team of experienced, highly trained doctors and nurses are available for emergency patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Department is particularly noted
for its expertise in handling cardiac patients, strokes, sports
injuries and acute surgical and medical emergencies.
With no city traffic hassles, the Emergency
Department is easily reached just off the Kingsway on Kareena
Road and is opposite the Sutherland Public Hospital.
Emergency Department services and facilities include resuscitation and diagnostic
equipment for all emergencies, an x-ray service, fully monitored cardiac bays,
plaster and suture facilities and a large, comfortable reception area.
Endocrinology
Services
The Endocrinology Service is of exceptional quality providing a comprehensive
inpatient clinical service in many aspects of endocrinology. The doctors attached
to this Unit are highly trained and have international reputations in their
specific fields. The Endocrinology Unit has particular experience and expertise
in the area of Diabetes Mellitus and the insertion of insulin pumps.
Gastroenterology
Services
The full range of endoscopic services are available including: upper GI, endoscopy,
colonoscopy, endoscopic laser palliation of cancer, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy
tube insertion, insertion of oesophageal prostheses for palliation of oesophageal
cancer, liver biopsy etc.
General
Medicine
There is a General Medical Unit which is co located and supported by a rehabilitation
service so that patients can receive full treatment and care to allow them
to be more fully functioning on discharge home
General
Surgery
The General Surgery Unit covers all aspects of general surgery including upper
gastro-intestinal, pancreatico-biliary, colorectal and endocrine surgery.
The operating theatres at Kareena Private
Hospital enjoy an enviable reputation with state-of-the-art
theatres equipped with the latest technology. Our operating
theatres incorporate brand new anaesthetic monitoring technology
and employ the highest infection control standards with all
instrumentation cleaned and sterilised in a central sterilising
department.
Geriatric
Services
The geriatric service has approximately 30 inpatient beds and is situated in
comfortable surrounds. Many entitled veterans and war widows and private patients
are admitted for continuing care. Operating under a multidisciplinary team
approach, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and
social work all have major input into the treatment and ongoing management
of patients.
Gynaecology
Surgery
The Gynaecology Service was established since 1993. It provides a general gynaecology
service with a special interest in "prolapse".
Intensive
Care Unit
The 4 bed Intensive Care Unit provides specialised care for patients who require
constant monitoring, intensive nursing care and respiratory support.
 Obstetrics
Maternity & Women's Health is a 21 bed unit with three
birthing rooms in the Delivery Suite and a refurbished level II licensed, 4 bed
Special Care Nursery and a 5th dedicated ventilated bed. The case mix of the
unit is antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum mothers and their babies. The casemix
also includes a significant amount of women's health surgery predominantly
gynaecology.
The unit is serviced by a dedicated team
of Registered Midwives/Resitered Nurses who are supported by
Enrolled Nurses who are Mothercraft trained. They are committed
to providing high standards of care to all patients irespective
of age, race, culture or creed.
The midwives and nurses promote the concept
of woman and family centred care. Child birthing women and
their families are encouraged to develop beginning life-long
mothercraft and parenting skills utilizing a hands on approach.
Our prepartion for parenthood education programs and postnatal
follow-up services are only a few examples of services we provide
to support and nurture mothers and their families.
Oral
Surgery
The Oral Surgery Unit provides an inpatient and consultation service as required.
Orthopaedics
The Orthopaedic Unit at Kareena Private Hospital offers a complete range of
orthopaedic services with a strong emphasis on elective surgery of the hip,
knee, foot, hand and shoulder.
Pathology
Symbion Laverty Pathology provides a stat pathology service in the disciplines
of Haematology, Immuno-haematology, Biochemistry and stat Urine Microscopy.
A range of urgent and impatient tests are conducted on site, whilst non-urgent
work and more complicated tests are referred to the main laboratories nearby.
Plastic
Surgery
The Plastic Surgery Unit at Kareena Private Hospital provides a broadly based
plastic surgery service. Patients referred to this Unit include patients with
skin and other malignancy requiring reconstruction; head and neck malignancy,
and traumatic, ischaemic or congenital skin defects.
Radiology
Located within the Hospital, Symbion provides radiology services to inpatients
and outpatients of Kareena Private Hospital. These services include CT scanning,
ultrasound and mammography.
The radiology facility, offers high standards of medical imaging appropriate
to this hospital while maintaining the level of service expected of a private
radiology practice.
Rehabilitation
Unit
The Rehabilitation Unit, opened in September 2006, has 24 inpatient beds in
comfortable surrounds. Operating under a multidisciplinary team approach, nursing,
physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and social work all have
major input into the treatment and ongoing management of patients. The Rehabilitation
Program offers individualised programs for all patients.
Respiratory
Medicine
The Respiratory Medicine Unit provides an inpatient as well as outpatient service
for patients with chronic airway disease, lung cancer and other respiratory
conditions.
Rheumatology
The Rheumatology service provided is an inpatient service and is done in consultation
and collaboration with the multidisclipinary team
Urology
Unit
The Urology Unit is a very active unit, providing inpatient, operating and
consultative services in all aspects of urology.
Vascular
Surgery
The Vascular Surgery Unit at Kareena Private Hospital has been established
for more than 20 years. The Unit provides a comprehensive peripheral vascular
surgical service to entitled veterans and to private patients based at Kareena
Private Hospital.
Paediatric
Surgery
The paediatric facility is encompassed by Day Surgery and Kingsway areas. A
high level of care is provided by suitably qualified staff in a family friendly
environment.
