Robotic surgery now available in Sutherland Shire

Patients in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire now have access to world-class robotic-assisted technology, with Kareena Private Hospital launching new equipment for local patients.

The hospital has introduced the da Vinci Xi robotic-assisted surgical system, which allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures through small incisions using a magnified HD 3D view and highly manoeuvrable instruments. The system is controlled by the surgeon throughout the procedure.

Urologist Dr Tru Ngo performed the first procedure using the new technology, completing a robotic-assisted adrenalectomy to remove a large adrenal gland. The new program will support procedures across urology, gynaecology, general surgery and colorectal surgery.

“The technology provides enhanced vision, precision and control during surgery, which can be particularly valuable when operating in complex areas of the body. It gives surgeons greater confidence when operating in more complex cases, even over traditional laparoscopic surgery,” Dr Ngo said.

“For suitable patients, robotic-assisted surgery can mean smaller incisions, less blood loss, less post-operative pain and a faster recovery compared with traditional open surgery.

“Most importantly, patients in the Shire can now access this state-of-the-art surgery locally, close to their family and support networks.”

The new robotic surgery program will operate across Ramsay Health Care’s surgical services at Kareena Private Hospital and Ramsay Surgical Centre Miranda, expanding the range of procedures available to patients in the local community.

Kareena Private Hospital Chief Executive Officer Stephen Wigmore said bringing the technology to the Shire was an important investment in local healthcare.

“This is a significant step forward for surgical care in the Shire and means more patients can access advanced surgical options right here in their local community,” Mr Wigmore said.

“By investing in this technology, we’re expanding the range of surgery available locally and giving more patients the option to receive their care close to home.”
